BC Advantage Funds Invests in Medical Ventures Corp.
Vancouver, July 6, 2004 - BC Advantage Funds (VCC) Ltd. ("Advantage") announced today that it has invested $300,000 into Medical Ventures Inc. (TSX: MEV), a medical device company focused on the development and commercialization of the MetricathT System.
The MetricathT System is a catheter-based technology that uses a balloon similar to an angioplasty balloon catheter to measure the diameter of an artery. This allows the attending surgeon to choose the best sized stent for insertion based on the reading on a computer attached to the catheter. Accurate readings of the diameter of the targeted artery are necessary to ensure that the stent stays in place and, if it is a drug eluting stent, that it lays closely to the arterial wall.
Paul Geyer, the President and CEO of the Medical Ventures, is a well-known and respected medical device entrepreneur and an Advantage Mentor. A Professional Engineer by training, Paul was previously the President of Mitroflow Corp, a medical device company located in Richmond, BC. From 1991 to 2001, Paul was instrumental in the growth of Mitroflow from nine to 120 employees. In 1999, Paul sold Mitroflow to Sulzer Medica, and continued as President until the end of 2001.
Separately, Advantage announced that it has sold more than $4 million of its $10 million 2004 tax credit allocation, with more than $3 million being received over the last six weeks. These tax credits provide Advantage investors with a 30% refundable tax credit for the 2004 taxation year on investments made up to $200,000 per year (maximum $60,000 annual tax credit).
