BC Tech Fund invests in Sunnybrook

Vancouver, September 14, 2004 - BC Advantage Funds (VCC) Ltd. is pleased to announce that its technology fund, The BC Tech Fund, completed an investment into Sunnybrook Technologies (www.sunnybrooktech.com).

Sunnybrook is a University of British Columbia spinout commercializing innovations in electronic display technologies. They have patented technologies that significantly increase the brightness and contrast of liquid crystal displays. This type of display is used in laptops, desktop computers and high definition televisions. This is currently a $15 billion per year market.

Conventional CRT displays yield a 300:1 dynamic range, and good flat-panel LCDs manage 400:1. Sunnybrook’s HDR display achieves 60,000:1 by offering over 30 times higher brightness than commercially available displays while at the same time producing ‘blacks’ that are over 10 times darker than those of conventional displays.

The inventors of the Sunnybrook technologies include Dr. Lorne Whitehead, Helge Seetzen and Greg Ward. Dr. Whitehead is the Vice President Academic at UBC, the inventor and founder of TIR Systems and has over 100 patents.

Sunnybrook is working on establishing several promising commercial opportunities for its technologies with Global 1000 manufacturers and potential market partners.

Dr. Peters, Fund Manager and CEO of the BC Tech Fund, said: “The Sunnybrook prototypes look very promising. If they can protect and successfully commercialize their technologies, this could be one of the most exciting companies in our province. This investment also highlights that the BC Tech Fund, and the other BC Advantage Funds, will invest at the earliest stages in a company's development."

Richard MacKellar, Sunnybrook’s CEO, added: “We are pleased to have the BC Advantage Fund as the first institutional investor in our company, and appreciate that they were able to invest in a simple, clean structure right along side our angel investors.”
